Global Education Database

Sponsored by USAID's Office of Education, the Global Education Database (GED) is a user-friendly source for international education statistics compiled from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics and the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). The GED also provides a series of analytic tools to facilitate effective use of the data.

Education Data

The GED provides access to education data from UNESCO's Institute for Statistics and the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). UNESCO data include a broad range of indicators, including data on all levels of education, workforce development, and literacy. UNESCO data are available as time series, with some indicators going back as far as 1971. DHS data, by contrast, have more detail about primary and secondary education and disaggregates some data into urban versus rural areas. However, as the DHS data are based on surveys in particular countries and in particular years, time-series data are not available.

Analytic Tools

The GED also provides a series of analytic tools, such as the Rapid Assessment tools and Millennium Development Goals tool, to facilitate effective use of the data. The Rapid Assessment tools help identify the factors influencing the generation and use of human capacity within a country or set of countries. The Millennium Development Goals tool presents data on two education-related monitoring indicators and the country status versus the goals.
